Chapter 13 Civil War Reconstruction

Part One:

1.       After reading the Bill, what plans do you see laid out for the former slaves?

The plans I see laid out for the former slaves are them being supplied shelter, them being given clothing and fuel, and them being given land.

2.       What do you think could have been added to the bill to garner broader support? What could have been changed or taken away?

 To gain broader support of the bill, I think that they could have mentioned the equality issues. I think the part at the end where they repealed the bill could have been taken away because they told them that they were getting all of this stuff and then took it away.

3.       Aside from their opposition to the abolition of slavery, what problems do you think the members of Southern States had with the Bill? Can you think of anything that would have appeased them?

 I think the Southern states really disliked the bill because they wanted to keep their slaves. They felt as if the slaves were not their equals and didn't deserve any of the things they got, especially the land. To appease them, I think the south would have liked to see the black people as their slaves again and not running around free or getting any of the stuff they got.

 

Part Two:

1.       What is her attitude toward white Southerners and their treatment by the federal government?

Her attitude towards the Southerners was a worrisome attitude. She was worried that her brothers wouldn’t come home from voting because the white people were instructed to “bring something to shoot” with them. She also mentioned how southerners were like goats and how they would keep on fighting for their rights no matter what. Her attitude about their treatment by the federal government was an appreciative one because the federal government was allowing the black people to vote.   

2.       What do you think accounts for her views?

For her views on the white people, I think the fact that some of them weren’t allowed to vote because of holding Federal office before the war and aiding in the cause of Confederacy accounted for her views. Also, the fact that they brought guns with them to scare the black people off to get the election the way they wanted it also persuaded her views.

3.       Would people with different views agree with her conclusions about "peace" in the South? Why or why not?

No, I don’t think they would because yes, maybe the white men were given back their citizenship, but they didn’t want the black people on the same level as them. They didn’t want them to have the same voting rights and have the opportunity to own land like they did.
