- One thing I learned this year was the Bill of Rights and the individual rights that it gives us.
- One thing that surprised me was that non-voters don't vote because they feel their votes won't matter and it will make no difference who wins.
- One thing that I did not agree with was how so many people are against prayer in school. I mean, yes, it shouldn't be shoved down people's throats but I don't think it would hurt to have it in school for those who want to participate in it.
- Taking Government is important in making us a well rounded person because it helps us to fully understand how the government is run and what is going on in the government.
- This class could be made better by having less GITMS.

Civil Rights and Civil Liberties
- How did World War II change America? This changed ideas on individual liberty and government power.
- According to Joan Biskupic, what major tensions existed in this time and in the time period that followed the war? Tensions between National Security, National Identity, Free Speech, and Individual Rights.
- What do you think Ms. Biskupic meant when she referred to the Supreme Court and said, "They don't move in a straight line. They move in fits and starts. They have to backtrack"? I think that she was meaning that nothing flows easily or smoothly in the Supreme Court.
Summary:
Many Americans felt the reason for fighting World War II was to protect the right to self determination, guarantee freedom from fascism, to guard freedom of religion, and inherit the rights to treat all people equally. The world became more democratic after the war. After the war, many Americans felt betrayed for fighting for freedoms somewhere else that they lacked at home.
Rights are relative not absolute:
This means that people can do as they please as long as it doesn't infringe on the rights of others.
Example: Free Exercise Clause means you can practice whatever religion you want and the government can't tell you otherwise. It does not allow you to violate laws, offend the public morals, or threaten community safety.

Principal Lay
- Personally, I don't think it would be a bad thing to teach religion in school, but then again, you can't just shove a religion down someone's throat. People believe different things. Those who want to participate in that could and those who do not want to participate shouldn't have to. I don't feel that school officials should be arrested for saying a prayer or anything.
- Pros: inform and teach people about God. Cons: different kinds of Christianity, conflict in religions.
Bill of Rights Scenario
- The amendment being violated is the fourth amendment because they went into her house without having a search warrant or any valid reason to arrest her but did so anyway because they saw a bomb under the couch.
- The amendment being violated is the first amendment because they did not allow him to have his meeting because of something that happened 2 years ago. The took away his right to have the meeting.
- The amendment being violated is the ninth amendment because the governement can't just come in and take her house from her like that.
- The amendment being violated is the first amendment because it is violating freedom of religion.
- The amendment being violated is the eighth amendment because they denied him a Lawyer and they just threw him in jail because they think he is the guy that stole from the store. They also are holding him accountable for German troops killing his grandfather in the war a while back.

Branches of Government
This political cartoon is depicting how the different branches of Government blame each other instead of themselves when something goes wrong.
I think that this picture shows an accurate representation of the way our Government is because there are so many people in the Government who do not take the responsibility for their own wrong actions. Not all are that way, but some are.

Basic Principles Political Cartoons
This picture represents Limited Government because it shows how the government is trying to take away individual rights but they aren't allowed to do so because there is a restriction on that.
This picture represents Separation of Powers because it shows how each branch has been made to be independent and equal.

Forrest Gump
1.) The disco era began in the late 60's, early 70's. The genre of music they listened to ranged from funk, latin and soul music. During this time, drug use also become very popular. The people in the 60's were always trying to find means of pleasure and using drugs is what they came up with. They also used drugs to try and get new perspectives on their lives.
2.) When Forrest's mom said "Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you're gonna get", I think that she meant no one can ever predict their life and what they will go through. Life is full of twists and turns and we just have to learn to take it as it comes at us.

1920's Spring Break Blog
Reasons for the Stock Market Crash of 1929:
- Credit Boom: rapid growth in bank credit and loans.
- Buying on Margin: you only had to pay 10 or 20% of the value of shares and you were basically borowing 80-90% of the shares. In the end, this left margin millionaires broke.
- Irrational Exuberance: people bought shares with the expectance of getting more money. As the prices kept rising, the people thought they had to do the same.
- Mismatch between Production and Consumption: production lines were moving along quickly, but it was a struggle to buy the items that were being made.
- Agricultural Recession: struggling to maintain profit, farmers were driven out of business because of the economic climate, better technology, occupational and geogrpahical immobilities.
- Weakness in the Banking System: many small to medium sized firms. The banks were prone to go out of business if deposits carried on.

1920's in class assignment
The president is stating that alcohol is the main cause for everything. He doesn't blame anything on the war or other things like that. He thinks that it is immoral to drink, sell, and creat alcohol.

Reasons U.S. entered the war:
This led us to war because Russia moved from a monarchy state to a communist state and President Wilson urged the U.S. to enter the war.

World War Part 1
- Imperialism- caused rivalry among countries
- Militarism- war is inevitable and could not be avoided
- Alliances- they backed each other up during war
- Nationalism- this caused war because countries looked out for their own interests and didn't care whose feet they stepped on.

American Imperialism
Reasons for Imperialism:
- Economic-natural resources and new markets
- Nationalism
- Military-advanced technology and growing armies
- Humanitarian-duty to spread blessings
I think this picture is showing that America wants to conquer other nations and add them to their territory so they will be a bigger country in the end.

Labor Unions of the 19th Century
Brief History of the Labor Unions:
Conflict between union and management was centered on the struggle for power in the workplace. The businesses viewpoint was employers should run the business how they see fit without interference from workers. The union's viewpoint was workers deserve a say in their own work conditions.
Political Cartoon
I think this political cartoon is portraying the rich people and big business owners trying to control those who work for them and those who don't have as much money as them.

Manifest Destiny
Manifest Destiny was the obligation to spread Christianity westward. The Indians living in the west were considered heathens because they didn't have the same religion. I believe this painting shows an angel guiding the American Settlers westward in order to spread the Christian religion to the Indians to save their souls.

Chapter 13 Civil War Reconstruction
Part One:
Part Two:
1. After
reading the Bill, what plans do you see laid out for the former slaves?
The plans I see
laid out for the former slaves are them being supplied shelter, them being
given clothing and fuel, and them being given land.
2. What
do you think could have been added to the bill to garner broader support? What
could have been changed or taken away?
To gain broader support of the bill, I think
that they could have mentioned the equality issues. I think the part at the end
where they repealed the bill could have been taken away because they told them
that they were getting all of this stuff and then took it away.
3. Aside
from their opposition to the abolition of slavery, what problems do you think
the members of Southern States had with the Bill? Can you think of anything
that would have appeased them?
I think the Southern states really disliked
the bill because they wanted to keep their slaves. They felt as if the slaves
were not their equals and didn't deserve any of the things they got, especially
the land. To appease them, I think the south would have liked to see the black
people as their slaves again and not running around free or getting any of the
stuff they got.
1.
What is her attitude toward white Southerners
and their treatment by the federal government?
Her attitude towards the Southerners was a
worrisome attitude. She was worried that her brothers wouldn’t come home from
voting because the white people were instructed to “bring something to shoot”
with them. She also mentioned how southerners were like goats and how they
would keep on fighting for their rights no matter what. Her attitude about
their treatment by the federal government was an appreciative one because the
federal government was allowing the black people to vote.
2.
What do you think accounts for her views?
For her views on the white people, I think
the fact that some of them weren’t allowed to vote because of holding Federal
office before the war and aiding in the cause of Confederacy accounted for her
views. Also, the fact that they brought guns with them to scare the black
people off to get the election the way they wanted it also persuaded her views.
3.
Would people with different views agree with her
conclusions about "peace" in the South? Why or why not?
No, I don’t think they would because yes, maybe
the white men were given back their citizenship, but they didn’t want the black
people on the same level as them. They didn’t want them to have the same voting
rights and have the opportunity to own land like they did.
