Forrest Gump

1.) The disco era began in the late 60's, early 70's. The genre of music they listened to ranged from funk, latin and soul music. During this time, drug use also become very popular. The people in the 60's were always trying to find means of pleasure and using drugs is what they came up with. They also used drugs to try and get new perspectives on their lives.
2.) When Forrest's mom said "Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you're gonna get", I think that she meant no one can ever predict their life and what they will go through. Life is full of twists and turns and we just have to learn to take it as it comes at us.

Domestic Policy Post World War II

Questions:

1. How many soldiers returned home after WWII and what did they hope to find?

•  12 million soldiers returned home after WWII and they hoped to find jobs, homes, and financial security.

 

2. How was Truman going to go about putting striking railroad workers back to work in 1946? 

• He forced the strikers back to work by executive order.
   

 

3. What problem did Truman face when trying to rally American’s around the Korean war effort and why? 

• Economic controls were weakened and Congress did not approve of his war taxes because pirces, wages, and the supplies of consumer goods began to stabilize and no one was really in the mood to scarifice.
   

4. What was Truman’s Executive Order (1947) and why was it significant? 

• His executive order was the establishment for the President's committee on equality of treatment and opportunity in the armed services. It is significant because it allowed anybody, no matter your race, color, religion or national origin, to be part of the military and be treated the same as everyone else.
   

5. How did Truman aid in ending the Steel Strikes in 1952?

• He seized the mills after they failed to agree to terms and strikes were getting ready to occur.
   

6. What were Truman’s successes?

• His successes were he held the economy together, America turned the corner to prosperity, people were working again, the massive labor struggle was finally over, and he helped pave the way to the equal rights legislation of the 1960's.

Reasons for the Stock Market Crash of 1929:

• Credit Boom: rapid growth in bank credit and loans.
• Buying on Margin: you only had to pay 10 or 20% of the value of shares and you were basically borowing 80-90% of the shares. In the end, this left margin millionaires broke.
• Irrational Exuberance: people bought shares with the expectance of getting more money. As the prices kept rising, the people thought they had to do the same.
• Mismatch between Production and Consumption: production lines were moving along quickly, but it was a struggle to buy the items that were being made.
• Agricultural Recession: struggling to maintain profit, farmers were driven out of business because of the economic climate, better technology, occupational and geogrpahical immobilities.  
• Weakness in the Banking System: many small to medium sized firms. The banks were prone to go out of business if deposits carried on.

The president is stating that alcohol is the main cause for everything. He doesn't blame anything on the war or other things like that. He thinks that it is immoral to drink, sell, and creat alcohol.

This cartoon is showing what the causes of alcohol are. It shows how people will act when drinking and after drinking it. This picture is also showing how it is immoral and how you can pretty much lose everything such as friends and self respect.

Russian Revolution
This led us to war because Russia moved from a monarchy state to a communist state and President Wilson urged the U.S. to enter the war.

World War Part 1

1. Imperialism- caused rivalry among countries
2. Militarism- war is inevitable and could not be avoided
3. Alliances- they backed each other up during war
4. Nationalism- this caused war because countries looked out for their own interests and didn't care whose feet they stepped on. 

American Imperialism

Reasons for Imperialism:

1. Economic-natural resources and new markets
2. Nationalism
3. Military-advanced technology and growing armies
4. Humanitarian-duty to spread blessings

I think this picture is showing that America wants to conquer other nations and add them to their territory so they will be a bigger country in the end.
